However, when unprecedented storms dumped over 12 inches of rain in a 6-hour window, the water had nowhere to go. Because our home was built in the 1970s before laser-leveled grading became standard, our foundation sat just a few inches lower than the newer developments constructed behind us. The rainwater runoff channeled directly into our property, and our home flooded. We spent months living in an RV in our front yard while we completely rebuilt our house from the studs down.
